US Major, OSS 1944

Kit #  B/28

Scale:  200mm Bust

Contents :  7 resin parts/1 strip metal foil

Price:  £35.00   Includes worldwide shipping

Another review sample from Mitches Military Models in 200mm scale, and this time a bust of a US Major of the OSS in 1944. The bust of the Major is from the waist, belt with ammo pouch, and he’s holding a grease gun, .45 cal. Machine pistol.

A pedestal is included for the bust, which is needed since his left arm hangs straight down. There is no head gear on his head and what you get is some fine detailing for hair, with receding hairline.

The below image courtesy of Mitches Military Models website and show different angles of the built up bust, withou paint. There are no instructions in the kit, which really isn't needed, and also no photo of the painted bust to use as reference. An internet search should reveal photo references to use when painting the bust.

Part I  In-Box review

Not wanting to go into the historical part of 11th Hussars, which I know nothing about, I will concentrate more on the figure it’s self. At this time I will only do an in-box review of the kit but may add a build and painting review at a later date.

On the left are some iamges of the parts included in this kit. There aren't many parts but what you get is excellant. There is minimal flash and mold seems to clean, as can be seen on the images to the left.

The head, as with both arms, are a separate item that has some exquisite detailing. His partially open mouth reveals upper and lower rows of teeth. All the detailing for his facial expression is evident, including the creased brow.

Click on the images below to see the close up detailing of the head and facial detailing.

The jacket looks spot on for the period and has lots of folds that will look great when painted with shadows and highlights. Under the jacket he’s wearing the button down shirt that is open at the neck. There are buttons and button holes which add firther detail to the uniform.

The grease gun is a nice item with equally nice detailing. Included in this kit is a length of thick metal foil to use for the sling of the grease gun. The gun has a clip attached and the Major has an ammo pouch on his belt.

Below are some close up views of some of the parts. The detailing of the parts is outstanding and the sculpter really did a fine job on the bust, especially the head and facial features.

All the parts are cleanly cast in solid resin with little to no flash or mold seams. What there is can be easily cleaned up. As can be seen in the images there is some resin dust particles which I did not remove before taking the photos, this is just a dust. The pedestal looks to have the appearance of stone and so I think would look good in a stone gray color. The pedestal can be used, or you can make your own and then place the bust on a decorative wood base.

The kit does not come with assembly instructions but instead has a photo of the assembled and unpainted figure on the box cover. As with the other review samples, and most likely all figure and busts from Mitches Military Models, the kit comes in a sturdy black box with parts in a ziplock bag and wrapped in bubble wrap.

All the resin parts are cast in a light gray color with very little flash or mold seems to clean. Basically five minutes of cleaning, a wash in warm soapy water and the figure is ready to be assembled.

The figure is resin cast in 11 parts with 5 main larger parts

Body

Head

Two arms

Jacket

The remainder being the sword and small parts such as straps with buckles. The figure is posed in an upright standing position hold his sword with two hands horizontally in front of him. His jacket is slung over his left shoulder and is cast in one fantastically detailed piece.

His head is adorned with the tall fur haired hat which looks appropriate from what I could find for references online. The face features a mustache and long bushy sideburns that was the style of that time period. All facial features are well represented and will look great when painted properly.

Moving onto the uniform, we first look at both the figures arms. His left arm has his hand attached but the right hand is not. The hand is part of the sword he is holding. The casting detail here, as with the rest of the uniform , is very fine and crisp. The folds in the sleeves will create some nice shadows and highlights which will stand out with painting.

Onto the body, we have the torso and legs cast as one piece. His right leg is straight but the left leg is slightly bent at the knee which gives the figure a more relaxed stance. Here, and the jacket over his left shoulder is where the details really stand out. The sculpter, Maurice Corry, has done a fantastic job in this area, right down to the tassles.

The only area here that I saw that could have been done better is on his right thigh where the cord overlaps the stripe on the outer pant leg. There is a slight gap there and it doesn’t look like it actually overlaps, but instead the stripe has a gap and the cord passes through it. Other than that the details are fabulous.

There are some casting seams and a bit of flash, but nothing major.

I plan on doing a painting review to show any flaws, seems etc. Part II will be a build painting review.
