'BIG RED'

1/10 scale Bust

Three (3) cast resin parts.

From the movie Hell boy we have a cast resin bust from Pathos Miniatures titled Big Red. The bust is in 1/10 scale and fully cast in a light gray resin. Included are two cigars, one seems to be light, with an ash at the end.

This review will be to show you what you get in this bust kit and also what it can look like painted. Since a photo can show more than written words I will try to concentrate on the photo aspect of the review, with captions to the painting process.

The bust comes attached to and rectangle base with angled top edges. This is a nice addition for displaying the bust and makes a sturdy mount for painting. One could remove this portion and place the bust on your wood block if you choose to.

Looking at the photos we can see some very nice detailing on this bust, especially in the face area. The mouth and eyes are nicely sculpted with fine detail that will stand out when painted.

A quick online search reveals that the bust is pretty much spot on when compared to still photos from the movie. I’ve taken a couple of photos for reference and review purposes and these are for discussion only and the rights belong to the movie.

Moving onto the painting part of this review I started by removing a mold line at the rear of the bust. This is very minor and limited to only the back side and not on the front. A quick wash with warm soapy water to remove and dust and mold release agent and I was ready for painting.

As with any model, a primer coat is very important and sets the base in which the base colors are then applied. Pre shading with primer can also help to bring out detailing and create shadows. I decided on a white primer from Vallejo Acrylics and applied in light misted coats at low pressure.

With the bust set aside to let the primer dry and cure for 24 hours, I studied my reference images and chose the paints that I would use n this bust of Big Red. The bust has only a few main base colors, the reddish skin color and his jacket.

The skin color was where I needed to make a balance between red and orange-red. My thinking was along the lines of the shading and highlighting that would come later. I wanted a mid tone that I could easily light or darken with acrylics and the airbrush. This was to be a pre shading by using a mix of Tamiya colors and lightened and darkened to create some dimension. Later oil paints will be used to blend this base and also add more depth and highlights with a mix similar to the acrylics used.

The coat received a base of lifecolor dark brown for the collar and a mix of Lifecolor acrylics for the yellowish – tan color of the coat. Using various shades of brown oil paints shadows and highlights. This was a quick and easy area to paint and contrasts well with Hell Boy’s skin color.

Once all the painting is done the last thing to do is the cigar. This was done using a dark and light brown Vallejo paint and the ash done with black and gray paint.

Below are the images of the completed bust.

Over all this is a great resin bust from pathos miniatures that is fun and easy to paint. The casting is fantastic and very little clean up needed. If your looking for a fun bust to paint to get away from the normal human flesh color, then this bust is a must have.

Special thanks to MSC sponsor Pathos Miniatures for supplying MSC Forum with this and other busts forreview. Please check in again as I will be reviewing two other busts in the next couple of months. These will be like this review, an in-box and painting review.
