First off I would like to thanks Dave Youngquist from Last Cavalry for donating the review sample.

Since we have a great in-box review I thought it would be cool to have a build/paint review as well. This is not a step by step review, and I am no figure painter, but to show how the bust can be painted. The box art is a great help for painting, especially when it doesn't have to be 100% accurate as with military uniforms, vehicles etc. As long as I can get close emough to the box art with what paints I have I will be happy.

Here's a look at the SK kit. Pics courtesy of TRM and taken from the review linked above.

After gluing the bust to the odd shaped pedestal I then gled the remaining parts to the torso....head too.

Once this was all secure, it was time for a light washing to remove any resin dust. A thorough drying with a hair dryer and the bust was ready for some primer. My choice of primer for most of my models, especially figures is the excellent range of colored primers from Vallejo. I have been using these for a couple of years and they lay smooth and hold fast to resin and plastics. I chose to use a white primer which will give a starting point for highlights.

Once dry I laid down some base colors and a pre-shading using Lifecolor acrylics for the jacket, hair, skin and armor. This dries pretty fast allowing me to continue with the painting, which is all done with Vallejo and Lifecolor acrylics, and not oils.

I painted the base colors on the armor, clothing and then lightened and darkened to create shadow and highlights. The same was done for the face, adding thin washes/filters to create shadow and highlights. I worked with thin layers and applying various shades. I then used some dark oils on the clothing and face, blending with a thinner dampened brush.

The armor plating was done the same way but to create a metal appearance I used Vallejo gold and brass colors thinned and applied in thin llayers, followed by washes.

The final result I think looks close to the box art, but not perfect.  Since this is my first large scale bust I am quite happy with the result and have learned a few things that I will do different next time, like using oil paints for the face/skin.

As you can see in the comparison above I chose some different colors that was more to my liking.

I had no issues with fit of parts or any flaws in the castings that I could see. With the primer applied it is much easier to check for any flaws such as small pin holes from air bubbles. Besides the casting blocks there was no cleaning to be done on the bust.

You can find this bust and many other busts and figures on the Last Cavalry website
