US NAVY Pilot (50s)

Overall I’d say that this figure would be a great addition to your 1/32 Scale 50’s era navy plane. The fact that the options for this type of figure are limited has very little if any to do with my recommendation. The attention to detail and the quality of the mold seem to be on par with what most modelers would expect from a high quality resin company. Again, my only criticism of the kit is the air bubble in the second head.

Despite the fact that there are more and more 1/32 scale post WWII aircraft being released a quick search on the most common hobby shop websites turn up very little in the way of sitting 50’s era US Navy Pilots. My impression is that PJ Products spotted that void and decided to fill it with this very nice kit.

The first thing I noticed when I pulled this out of the shipping box was the very nice color display of the painted figure and the crisp PJ Productions graphics. The box, while not very large, is sturdy enough to handle a bit of shipping abuse, which, let’s face it, almost always happens.

To my pleasant surprise there is also a nice color picture insert which can aid the modeler in the construction and painting of the figure. In the box are three blocks which contain, two heads, arms, spare oxygen hose, and main body. I was excited to see that the legs and body were cast as one piece. Even though the figure is seated and the seam probably wouldn’t be seen, I’ve always found that the seams around the legs can be a little difficult to get rid of.

As I inspected the parts I noticed that the detail is almost perfect. I say almost because the non-helmeted head figure has a pretty significant bubble right on his chin. I suspect, due to the overall quality, that this is a one of but it’s still a bit disappointing.

The next block I looked at contains the arms and the O2 hose and I have to say these are flawless. There is virtually no flash to be found on any of the parts and there is no seam line whatsoever. Another nice touch, the arms have a bulge on them for easy insertion into the body.

Last but certainly not least is the main body itself. I was a little concerned when I pulled the figure out of the bag as there was a bit of flash but upon closer inspection it literally almost came off by blowing on it. The details of the flight suite and the harness appear to be very crisp and should take dry brushing and wash very well.
